Eden District Treppie Tour: September 2013

Communities in ten locations spanning from Heidelberg to Oudtshoorn were given basic business and digital literacy skills via a MEDO Treppie tour through the area known as the Eden District. This initiative forms part of the Economic Development Department of the Western Cape Government’s drive to interact with community members in this region, and encourage entrepreneurship and skills development.

“We aimed to raise awareness around the Entrepreneurship Week to take place in the district and to promote entrepreneurship as a viable job creation tool,” says Deon Damons, Head of Enterprise Development at the Western Cape Government. With the ten computer workstations on board Treppie, entrepreneurs who have never had access to the Internet before were given basic browser skills training by navigating the Western Cape Government’s website and provided with an e-mail address.

Supported by representatives from the local SEDA branches, mini business skills workshops were also conducted, teaching the community members how to spot business opportunities simply by reading their local newspapers. They were also taught how to do a business pitch.

MEDO Treppie“The entrepreneurs were excited that we came into their communities to provide them with these skills and awareness around the opportunities that are right on their doorstep,” says Nolu Tutani, MEDO Programmme Manager.

“They were keen to know more, such as how to register their businesses, and of course, how to grow their businesses. We definitely need to go back to this region as they are hungry for information.”

“With the value received during this initiative, the Western Cape Government plans to conduct further tours later this year and have earmarked the West Coast as the next region we would like to impact,” Damons concludes.
